What to do if you have found termites ?
If you have found termites (White ants) in or around your home, it can be distressing. However, termites around the garden are common. Depending on where you find the termite activity, and what species of termite they are will determine the next step.
If you have found active termites, or termite damage in your home, the next step would be to have a professional conduct a thorough inspection and work out a Termite Management Plan.
If you find living termites, or termite damage:
-
DO NOT DISTURB THE AREA
Termites are easily disturbed. If you try to spray the termites yourself, or break open damaged timbers to investigate, you are reducing the effectiveness of professional termite treatment options. Furthermore, because termites are constantly returning to known food sources, disturbing that area can force them to forage elsewhere, or - effectively spread.
The worker termites gather the wood, and return to the colony. They will continue to go backwards and forwards from the timber they are attacking to feed the other termites in their nesting site. This allows us to use termite control products including termite baits, that they can take back to the colony which can greatly reduce the number of termites, or eradicate the nest entirely.

DO NOT FEEL PRESSURED TO ACCEPT A TERMITE QUOTE
If you have found termites, it is understandable that you want them gone as soon as possible. However, it is likely the termites have already been there for some time, another few days whilst you consider your options won't make any real difference to the amount of damage the termites have caused. The Pest Management Industry has improved greatly over the years, however there may still be some companies or commission based sales-people that may take advantage of the situation. Do not feel obliged to sign a contract then and there.

BE WARY OF CHEAP OR OVER THE PHONE QUOTES
Every house is different. Small variances in house design, external factors such as paving, concrete, raised garden beds, steps or decking that butt against the home and the building structure can all make a massive difference to the termite management plan that should be implemented, and to the final cost. When considering a termite treatment to your home, expect a technician to come to the property to ascertain the most effective treatment, as well as measure the relevant areas to be treated. High quality termite products are very effective, and are priced accordingly, termite treatments require a lot of time and work. Beware of cheap quotes and if you are unsure, ask questions.
